Loc Maintenance: Summer Edition!

Every summer I ask any hair stylist my most popular two questions of the summer:
How do I keep locs smelling fresh in the summer heat between appointments and how do I protect my locs during swimming??

This time I posed my questions to master locticians and natural hair stylists at Loc Lov Styles of  Loclov.com on Instagram during their weekly "Ask the Stylist" feature to get their advice.  I'm so excited about their responses (because they are great at natural hair with a holistic approach) that I had to share it with you guys.

Read below!

Will this help you this Summer?  Do you have any advice to add?? Please chime in!
Also, stay tuned for a review on Re'Fresh N which has been called the Febreeze for locs. So glad I got my hands on this stuff!

African Pride's Ultimate Beauty Social, Washington DC

In June, I attended the African Pride Ultimate Beauty Social where I had the pleasure to hear a wonderful panel of speakers share their experiences and opinions on hair and to learn about African Pride's line of Shea Butter Miracle products.  I'm so excited that brands are creating products for people with natural hair and transitioning to natural hair.

The brunch was held at the Beacon Hotel, where I had always wanted to visit for brunch.  Can we say doubly excited?? Yes I counted this in my bday celebration, hehe.  The panel included Joi Marie from The Fab Empire, Lianne Farbes of The Makeup Girl, Erin Baily of Scandalous Beauty and Panama Jackson of Very Smart Brothas.  Lively conversation was had, good food was eaten, and information and products shared.

Check out this video to see what was all going down on the African Pride's tour stop in DC!

Summer Hair

Hey you guys!
I've been wilding out over the summer, celebrated my birthday all June and now I'm settling down and trying to be a bit more constructive with my summer, lol.  My last post is about me bleaching my hair. If you follow me on any other social network, you probably know how my hair turned out, what style it's in and all.

For archival purposes and some sort of continuity on the blog, I'll document it on here as well.  Sorry to those who are tired of seeing this, but, hey! My blog, my choice *cheese*

The bleaching job turned out fab! No problems, no worries! My sister bleached and colored my hair. She had experience with doing her own locs. I followed an ehow.com article just to acquaint myself with the process.

The only thing that made me weary was the my scalp/crown of my head was sensitive after the process and the very front of my hair was straightened quite a bit.  That was only the pink colored portion because I bleached it twice trying to get the color like i wanted.

My color looked great.  I got a fab pin up done for vacation and got lots of compliments!!

Locs: Bantu Knots, Cheat Style for Curly Locs

Hey family!
A while back I my sister (my loctitian ;)) did my hair in bantu knots.  It's a style she wears from time to time as a way to get curly locs.  Of course, I had to get them too because I'm am definitely not one for the hair dryer.

I wore the style for a couple of days (3-4).  I even wore them to this Magnolia Makeup event.  Remember this?

When I was ready to take them out, I blasted the knots in the back with a blow dryer (they were stubborn about drying) and then took them down!  Here are the results.

Loved it! Finding a way to cheat the blower dryer and get curls is all that!

Oh you've seen those bottom pics before of my curls? In my Revlon Naked Foundation review post?  Well, go back and revisit the review for an update! ;)

Trendy Styles for Natural Hair

Fab blogger, Mz. Sixx of Au Naturale, remixed an article by Total Beauty entitled 10 Hair Trends You'll Want to Try in 2012. Mz. Sixx shows how to achieve the same styles on natural hair!! I was so excited because that's the same thing I think about with my locs. I never have the guts to try these ideas, but my sister is more adventurous with her natural hair mohawk.

Check out the post by Mz. Sixx... tell her Yummy411 sent you over ;)

My next loc hair goal: Loc Bun

Yup... a regular ol' bun.  This one is a touch fancy as it's not spread around from the center.  I reached my goal of a ponytail, now I want a bun.  I may be done with hair goals after I reach a bun... well I never got my red velvet cake hair.............. hmmmm.

While I have these length goals, I'm pretty partial to locs that are right above the shoulder or at the shoulder length. They are short, but long enough.  I think my hair is actually getting a bit long for my style/lifestyle =p  I totally understand why alot of women who cut their locs off, keep a short, boy cut.

Here are some cool loc updo's and  how-to's from youtube:

My last loc updo! (August 2011)

Can you see the back? It was two rolls, rolled into one for a 'mohawk-ish-pompador-look'. I tried a new stylist this time. The same one my sister goes to. I asked her to make the two rolls touch, but I think our communication broke down some where. Either way I still enjoyed the look. The stylist took about an hour to do my hair; root maintenance included! No clips, no drying time and a style?! I was in heaven! I got really used to having my hair up. Can't wait to get another style!

Lately, I've been really inspired by victory rolls. I made victory rolls in my hair when I had the bodacious curls, but I couldn't get them to stay up. I want to try them again, but that was a hair do for when my curls got old. Just wanted to show the style!

Naturally Fabulous! Check out my sister's hair!

Mhmm, my sister was inspired by me when she got her new hair do, hehe.

Let's see how long you've been a reader... which sister is this? ;)

Check it out!

I call this the french roll/mohawk look. My sister Jess started by dying the top of her head blond. Now she has kind of the tri-color thing going on. Dark brown at the base/bottom, her deepened red... Remember her 'inspired by Rihanna red'? And now the blond. I love it! Rolled it up from bottom to top and secured with hair pins, the 'do is the total hip accessory to any outfit/look!

Mobile Uploads: My new braid out, loc do!

Thanks Jess for hooking me up!
Jessica (my sister) simply braided my hair up into chunkier braids using 3 locs each when doing regular maintenance. She secured the ends with rubber bands and I wore the braids for a day to let them air dry. I took them out and voila! There you have it!

Check out my video where I'm wearing this hair style as well as discuss my favorite brushes right now!

Naturally Fabulous, Part 2

Remember, how I oogled over Mary's Hair done by Anne of Natural Rootz Urban Hair Care at Technicolor Salon and Spa in Upper Marlboro/Largo, MD? Well for my bday, I treated myself to a splendid do! Check it out!

I was ambivalent about getting an up-do because I know my "kitchen" would be unruly! However, I went with the flow and let Anne create a hair do just for me.

On my experience: I went to Technicolor immediately after picking up the kid from aftercare, mid-week. Everything was easy going, modern and quite the black movie beauty shop experience minus the drama and nasty gossip. Maybe I went at a good time? I was there for quite a while, but Anne the stylist didn't have her assistant there. I can appreciate that Ms. Anne is 100% natural in what she does and uses in her clients' hair, but my kitchen needs something strong and holding like-- brown gel... all due respect to the pure oils ;) I think I learned that I'm not 100% natural minded, but I look forward to learning from Anne. I'm also looking forward to going back for a funkier, edgier 'do!

On the salon (and spa): Nice resting areas, no sitting at dryers and having to rotate every few clients...modern design, flat screen TV, large windows to get good views of day light.. pretty impressed. I was expecting a bit more of the shampoo area, but ehh.. that wouldn't stop my show.

On Anne, founder of Natural Rootz: Anne has an easy, relatable spirit. She took time with me, I felt a head massage during my shampoo, she gave me an analysis of my hair (everything was in good shape!) and gave me some natural hair tips, as well as tips on why it's good to see a natural hair specialist versus stylists that don't specialize in natural hair. Anne is very creative and innovative, gaining inspiration from everything around her. She doesn't let the notion of natural hair limit her ideas. She helps natural sistas obtain styles that are works of art!

Naturally Fabulous

Name: Mary
How long have you been natural?: Two years... Going natural was a dare from her best friend. She did it and has been enjoying the journey ever since.
Salon: Technicolor Salon Upper Marlboro, MD (Largo Town Center/Blvd at the Cap Ctre)

Mary's hair and style was too fly. The gorgeous color of her hair, design and her ability to own it, I just had to inquire about her 'do (...AND makeup, nails and more! Lol!) As a blogger, I've been in the habit of doing this, but have paused for a bit because some people aren't as receptive. (Street style bloggers I need some tips!) Mary was very sweet to let me capture her look while on the Metro. Yes y'all, I got her pic and we gabbed it up all while on the train. She gave me insight on her experience at Technicolor, which I had no idea was a salon! I'm looking forward to making my appt!

Have you been to Technicolor?

Thanks Mary!!

Hair Update April 2011

Hey Amina!!

Me and my locs!

Side view... the side looks a little baldy, but that's cuz i twisted them. They get fuzzy and you can't see any scalp!

I couldn't get a total back view because I didn't have a photog assistant handy (the kid) lol, so this was the best I could do.

Randoms about my hair:
*The last time I colored my hair, I colored the top/crown a
nice vibrant red, but now it's a copper :/ Red maintenance is hard!
*I love being a red head.
*I'm ready to get some curls back!
*With my locs being longer, I'm worried about the Summer time.
(Heat, heaviness, sweat, bugs, outside dander, ughhhh)
*My locs are getting to that point where I always want them in a pony
tail of some sort.
*My next goal length is to get my ponytail in a bun.
*Length isn't super important to me as I've liked my hair at different
lengths.
*I want a deep red velvet red color at the crown and some
violet or orange highlights.
*I'd still love for Thierry Baptiste to do my hair.
*The most annoying things about my hair right now is the unruly
kitchen. No matter how much I try to get the hair twisted in a loc,
none of it stays and locs.
*I pick at my locs with tweezers. Sometimes wearing different fabrics, material
gets in my locs hanging on my back.

Time flies!

Buds at the end of my locs!

Hair irritation #1 right now (oh besides the moisture battle): buds straggling at the ends of my locs. See above there is a thin area between the bud at the end of my loc and the rest of my loc? Ugh! Before I found these, the ends of my hair were thick coils from when i started my locs with comb coils. I went to a hair stylist and she pretty much cut all of them off as they were making my hair way too bulky.

Now that I find quite a few buds at the ends of my locs, I cut them off. For more maintenance on my hair, I cut down thicker, spongier buds along my locs to keep heft out of my hair.

Visit Brittany's hair blog where she talks buds and locs!

Judge Kimberly Knowles- Legally Loc'd!

Cloaked in the judicial black robe, a beautiful woman of color with locs down her back presides as a Magistrate Judge in Washington, DC.

And who said locs weren't professional?

Kimberley S. Knowles was appointed Magistrate Judge by Chief Judge Lee F. Satterfield
on May 10, 2010.

Magistrate Judge Knowles was born and raised in Bronx, New York. She received a
Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1992 and her Juris Doctor from Howard
University School of Law in 1996.

After graduation from law school, she served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Eric T. Washington, then Associate Judge on the D.C. Superior Court. In that capacity, she worked primarily on criminal matters. After her clerkship, Magistrate Judge Knowles joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. She served in the Appellate, General Felony, Community Prosecution and Major Crimes, Fraud and Public Corruption and Sex Offense/Domestic Violence Sections, earning numerous special achievement awards. In October 2004, she was selected to be a deputy chief of the Sex Offense/Domestic Violence Section,
where she served until her appointment to the Court. As a deputy chief, she supervised the investigation and prosecution of cases involving domestic violence, the sexual abuse of adults and children and offenses committed against minors. She also regularly conducted trainings on sexual abuse and domestic violence issues for various community organizations. Magistrate Judge Knowles is a licensed foster parent and has one child in her care.

Judge Knowles accomplished a lot in her professional career and none of it had to do with her hair. Well, it would be interesting to know her personal experience and the decision to loc her hair, but until then I'm content knowing she's an achiever with locs! *Granted, we do live in chocolate city where people are a tad bit more accepting....
