Magnolia Makeup Meetup DC Recap

Post inauguration weekend, one of our chilliest days of Winter 2013 in Washington, DC to date, the Louisiana born and bred sister duo of Magnolia Makeup assembled a makeup meetup at the Zora Neal Hurston inspired, southern eatery, Eatonville.


Beauty enthusiasts came out to chop it up, shop pigments and be inspired by the color of Magnolia Makeup!

I was in such good company with other fans of Magnolia Makeup. I was doubly excited because they brought an event to Washington, DC and Nala remembered me from The Makeup Show!! This time I didn’t have to travel to NY for our beauty lusts!! DC girls love color and innovation! We need more of these events!


While there, I shopped and was able to chat it up with Tia, one of the Magnolia Makeup Sisters. You may be familiar with her as she’s the face of Magnolia Makeup on Youtube.

On the vision for Magnolia Makeup:

Tia says she wants Magnolia Makeup to show women in Louisiana that makeup isn’t just a teeny bopper activity, but an intelligent art and form of expression.

On what's new with Magnolia Makeup product:
A true deep gray and lilac lip colors are new for Spring.  So new, they were unnamed! I got to peek at them and test them out.  I didn't get pictures.... well


On what inspires her:

Surprisingly, she said she had never been asked that! With her varied and creative background (jewelry making and culinary arts to name a few), she draws inspiration from everywhere… food, places, memories and more!

My interest in the Bounce culture of New Orleans led me to ask Tia about Messy Mya (if she knew him) and a Bounce inspired collection:

She went to school with Messy Mya! The sisters actually have a bounce song that they play at events! I’m unclear if there will be a Bounce collection brewing any time soon, but I hope I garnered enough buzz for her to think about one!

Yummy411: MAC Naughty Nautical Launch

Hi all... so I want to talk Naughty Nauticals. Sorry folks, no swatches here. I swatched a little too much for it to make it back home and take pics of it.

Anyhooo, if you care to chat about it and hear my take on it.. let's go!

But first, I must give a shout out to Ms. Tameka (sorry if I misspell your name)! It was my first time meeting a Yummy411 reader (that wasn't a friend or family member) outside of the blog! I was so honored to meet her. When she recognized who I was, I really felt special. I'm always trying to look out for familiar faces or even those Specktralites in my area. Good meeting you Tameka!

Okay, back to the show

Lipsticks- most are lustres and barely there colors. If you like Bare Slimshine l/s, possibly even Viva Glam V, you'll like the Buoy Oh Buoy. On me, it's a true lustre, barely there color, close enough to lip conditioner in tinted beige. I got it=( It might make a return. The star of the lipsticks was truly Port Red! If you missed Queen's Sin from this past Christmas collection Antiquitease then you'll definitely want to hop on this!

Lipglasses- A bit of a snore to me, but they definitely have a bit more dimension that looking at promo pics online. I like Bateaux which is this collections version of those very familiar or comfortable with Sinnamon lip lustre, or Oh Baby lip glass-- tan with a bit of pearl, not iridescence nor glitters, but a shine more or less of a toned down chrome glass. Love Knot is a blue based baby pink with some light blue iridescence. It's soft, but definitely there. Cute, but I passed because I know this is something I would definitely layer and not wear alone. I need products to be stars in their own right. A MAC MA was wearing Dervish lip liner, Buoy oh Buoy lipstick and Ensign lipglass (so she says ;)) Great looking combo on her!

Eye Shadows- If we aren't fixated on lipglasses, the next product to catch our attention is usually the eye shadows. If the lipsticks are a snore, then these will definitely put your lights out. You may notice Submarine eyeshadow which is a pretty vibrant blue. Great blue if you don't own any flashy blues and it's not super frosty. I passed since I wasn't sure how close it was to my Blue Storm eye shadow from a recently passed collection, Blue Storm. I think blue storm is darker, but Submarine is definitely smoother than my Blue Storm which is rather chalky for a frost. Illegal Cargo and Shore Leave are very pastel and frosty.

Pigments- Mutiny's the star of this clan. It's a light sky blue aqua. Very pretty. The others are very pretty, but I just wasn't intrigued and didn't know how I'd use them. I know there will be some people on Spectra that will blow my mind with these simple colors, so I'll wait on their lead =p Lovely Lily is a shade up from viz-a-violet, which is barely a shade up from violet.. see the trend? I passed. Mutiny might win me over though.

Polishes- Of course the blue Naughty Nautical polish is on my radar. I'm looking for a dupe of Dior's signature blue polish color!

Musiq Concert FOTD

For my bday in June, I got Musiq Soulchild concert tickets. I've been counting down the days. Finally, that day came yesterday. My sister Jess and I went. We had a great time hanging out after work and going to the show. Thanks to my sister Toni P for making sure we had a great time. You're the best!

Yummy411 tips on seeing Musiq in concert:

1. When going to see Musiq, take your S.O.S or be sure to have one to go home to.
2. See him at a small concert hall, lounge or club or just don't have high expectations.

makeup used:

• face- mac face primer, msf natural medium dark powder
• cheeks-sincere blush, clinique shimmering tones powder, a touch of other worldly blush
• eyes-select coverup to prep eyes, covergirl queen collection creme foundation to conceal under eyes, saddle (lid), i had saturnal in the crease, but decided entremauve looked better and covered it up... entremauve pigment (crease, outer v, and to line bottom lid), milani silver bullet e/s (inner and outer corners), mystery eye khol to line (my fav right now), styli style bronze liner (water rim), loreal voluminous carbon black mascara, clinique shimmering tones as highlight, and cork e/s in brows
• lips- at the beginning of the nite i wore soothing beige lip conditioner and lancome's truffle lipstick with a little crescent gloss, but by the time these pics were taken i touched up with taupe notch l/g

*I've been using my purple entremauve because I don't get to wear it often and I decided to start putting it to work! lol

I went to swatch some stuff that's on my To-Buy List to make sure I really want to buy it. All from MAC:

So here's the run down (going sort of clockwise starting from top left?):

Romping e/s seems very close to a Loreal HIP color, from the Brazen duo. I want to believe that Romping has a tinge of purple...argh! gotta swatch again!

checkmark src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1136/617371280_31fa130583_s.jpg" width=75>Overrich lipstick- great summery color, almost a pastel coral. The lustre finish makes it slightly sheer and moisturizing. I love this. Right below is Lil Sizzler lip gelee on top. They are beautiful together.

Premeditated creme color base- eehh too red for me, just wanted to try and see what it was like.

checkmark src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1136/617371280_31fa130583_s.jpg" width=75>Fancy Ray blushcreme- Eve looked fantastic in it, couldn't I? I might get it just for that sake. I don't have my beloved 187 right now, but the foundation brush works just as well (thanks for the tip Smashbox!)

The untitled metallic lilac color is called Haunting, I believe. Beautiful! I was so tempted to get it, but I have Viz-a-violet pigment. That pigment used wet is the same thing! I gotta think smart, lol. Otherwise, it would totally be mine!

Nightfish fluidline- dark, muddy, nothing special to me. I guess it's not as harsh as Blacktrack fluidline. I'd rather have clean, crisp, pigmented black instead.

checkmark src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1136/617371280_31fa130583_s.jpg" width=75>Ostentatious fluidline- dark, underrated gray... look again, it's a metallic gray with some multi-color shimmer. Gotta have!

Cork e/s- I already own this color... I mainly use this in my brows, but when shaded and blended out, it's a good golden brown for a crease color. See the difference between Cork and Saddle?

Kid e/s- like the name, cool neutral color when next to a dark matte. it's about my skin color, but next to Saddle or Saturnal it's a great color. I shall pick this up from a CCO or sometime later down the line. It's not a must -have -right -now color.

checkmark src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1136/617371280_31fa130583_s.jpg" width=75>Saturnal e/s- this color may look regular, not special, mundane... but this is actually a smoked green with slight shimmer. Again, great crease color. Don't under estimate the crease or the dark colors that you can place there.

This white, opalish/pink pearl color (some may find it silvery, others may find it golden depending on skin tone) is a beautiful color. Great highlight or lid color. If you are familiar with Motif and adore it like I do, this is a must-have-right-now!

Fab and Flashy- a pretty mid-toned orange, summery, cute... undecided.. How often will I use orange? Why do I need more than one as I already own Rule e/s?

Decisions, decisions!

Next, I was on to Sephora. Check your local Sephora for discounted brushes! Brushes will be on sale until they are gone. Don't be a brush snob. Their brushes are just as good as MAC, Stila, Estee Lauder or Sonia Kashuk. A discount always makes a brush a good one, lol!

Lastly, I was in the mood to try my Eve inspired look:

I'll tell what I used and HOW I used it:

-I based my entire eye (lash line to brow) with concealer using my fingertips making a sheer layer.

-covered lid (lash line to crease) with Jesse Girl's green/blue loose powder (was hoping to brighten the blue, but oh well..) with a flat shader brush.

-covered lid with MAC's Bang on Blue with cleaned flat shader brush.

-use Cork in my crease with Sephora's round crease brush. Just a bit, swiping my crease with 'wind shield wiper' movements to give slight depth to the lid.

-I used Maybelline Cool color stick in Moody blue to line eyes, upper and lower lids.

- I used a black liner right near lash line to deepen lash color. I also used it to line my waterline (use a waterproof liner for this!)

-I used Max Factor 2000 Calories mascara in black for lashes.

-I used Magic Dust e/s with my fluffy round crease brush (MAC #217) from crease to brow for a sheer highlighted look (also to soften crease color).

- I used MAC's #266 brush to apply Cork e/s color to my brows

-concealed shadowy spots (dark under circles)

- Buffed my face with my foundation powder (MAC's natural mineralize skinfinish powder in medium dark) with a kabuki brush

-Harmony blush on cheeks with Essence of Beauty angled blush brush.

-Hug me lipstick with C-thru lipglass on lips (Ladies, this is a fab combo.. not just on me! Essence used this for a photo shoot with Senaa Lathan, gorgeous!)

-Clinique all over shimmer powder with small powder brush in highlighting zones... tops of cheeks, nose, chin, etc.

Hey Nikkia!

I tried the blue brown! What an interesting color to work with.. anything i put on it, it turned blue! It made for a blue brown kinda day.. eh.. what do you think?

So Nikkia gave me a piece of heaven by sending me home with a bit of blue brown pigment, fuschia pigment, Milani's rich chocolate.. and... golden olive pigment! More of these photos to come.... and less frowning LOL!

EOTD: the Apple Diva way!

Hey Apple!

You all know that I'm always excited to share makeup tales, hauls and experiments, so in discussing these things with my homey AppleDiva, I asked for some visuals. She has been gracious enough to share some shots with Yummy411:



In the above shot she used- (all MAC) Softwash grey (pigment i believe)on her lid, Silver ring in her crease, and Patina as her highlight (or on the brow bone.)






In the second shot, she used- Golden Olive pigment on the lid, Bronze in the crease and on the brow bone.

Golden olive is on my to-buy list! It's looking good on all faces! The pic is kinda blurry, but you get the picture right? I joked with Apple that she just about cropped her eye out of the pic!

Thanks for sharing Apple! I love testing out colors, esp ones that are new to me!

My MAC Stash!

From the Balloonancy collection (Purple and orange rocks!):

-Festivity lipstick (light orange frost)

-Silly Girl (light orange with intense frost) and Perky l/g

-Viz-a-violet pigment

-Vin Goth nail polish (dark purple with subtle sparkle)

Other:

-Harmony powder blush ( a nice tan blush for my complexion)

-Twinks e/s (bronzed plum... a cool smokey eye for me)

-Nonconformist fluidline liner (purple!)

So the collection is very basic, but the promotion was fun and light hearted. I'm done drooling over and waiting for the next releases (until I see something really good that is.) I want to be surprised.
