Magnolia Makeup Meetup DC Recap

Post inauguration weekend, one of our chilliest days of Winter 2013 in Washington, DC to date, the Louisiana born and bred sister duo of Magnolia Makeup assembled a makeup meetup at the Zora Neal Hurston inspired, southern eatery, Eatonville.


Beauty enthusiasts came out to chop it up, shop pigments and be inspired by the color of Magnolia Makeup!

I was in such good company with other fans of Magnolia Makeup. I was doubly excited because they brought an event to Washington, DC and Nala remembered me from The Makeup Show!! This time I didn’t have to travel to NY for our beauty lusts!! DC girls love color and innovation! We need more of these events!


While there, I shopped and was able to chat it up with Tia, one of the Magnolia Makeup Sisters. You may be familiar with her as she’s the face of Magnolia Makeup on Youtube.

On the vision for Magnolia Makeup:

Tia says she wants Magnolia Makeup to show women in Louisiana that makeup isn’t just a teeny bopper activity, but an intelligent art and form of expression.

On what's new with Magnolia Makeup product:
A true deep gray and lilac lip colors are new for Spring.  So new, they were unnamed! I got to peek at them and test them out.  I didn't get pictures.... well


On what inspires her:

Surprisingly, she said she had never been asked that! With her varied and creative background (jewelry making and culinary arts to name a few), she draws inspiration from everywhere… food, places, memories and more!

My interest in the Bounce culture of New Orleans led me to ask Tia about Messy Mya (if she knew him) and a Bounce inspired collection:

She went to school with Messy Mya! The sisters actually have a bounce song that they play at events! I’m unclear if there will be a Bounce collection brewing any time soon, but I hope I garnered enough buzz for her to think about one!

SugarSweet MSF's: Perfect Topping and Refined

I mentioned that I would get to these back in my other SugarSweet post... so, here it is!


The last of my SugarSweet goodness consists of the two limited edition released mineralized skinfinish pressed powders: Refined and Perfect Topping pictured below, respectively.

First, let's clear the air. These should not have been made MSF's, but rather a highlighting, iridescent, or beauty powder of some sort. These do not impart the glow, sparkle and pigment that we've come to love from MSFs.

Perfect Topping: Omg! I love this. A pearl, light sheen pink that is so perfect for giving that touch of sheen and glow to the skin on your high points. The name suits it very well! This is what I wanted out of Star and Belightful Iridescent Powders and Icescapade MSF!!! I just love it. Really, I do. No chunky glitters, just the right sheen.

Refined: This is the peachy, gold version of Perfect Topping. If you have golden undertones or a gold sheen works better on you than a silver (like Perfect Topping) this is the product for you. The subtle sheen is so delectable, so great! Honestly, I do love this, but you can definitely get a comparable product from more costly high end brands, like Estee Lauder with super fine milled shimmer powders.

Now for some real talk. If you are anal about any oil or shine this may not be the product for you especially in photos. I'm part of the combat shine crew and generally don't want these products, but ahh! Gotta live a little. I will just be sure to not use flash photography or I'll use a bit of translucent powder over it to dull down the shine.

Yummy411: High End vs. Drugstore- MAC Strobe Cream vs. Wet N Wilds' Illuminating Lotion

This is for all of you that have doubts about Strobe Cream and Liquid. Here's a drugstore item that's comparable: Wet n Wilds' St. Tropez Illuminating Lotion #988.

This product comes in a few different colors- a clear gel with sparkles, a very bronzey bronze lotion and this one, white lotion with a pink iridescence. I bought this about two years ago to mix in with my foundation... being on the hunt to look 'ethereal'

I couldn't quite capture the pinkish glow, but it shows a bit peach here. I think it's worth a try for the price tag of $2.99-$3.99. It's not moisturizing. It also may cast some what of a whitish cast depending on your skintone if used alone. For reference I'm NC 35-37 and it blended pretty well for me and worked well with my foundation. Because I like to be over the top, it's rather subtle for my taste, but a great product to try nonetheless. Check it out for yourself!

Don't bother trying to find it on the website. I couldn't find it on there when I bought it and I still can't find the product on there now =( If you ever find this and try it, tell me what you think.

*Please use this product sparingly or be sure not to skimp on your regular skincare. (i.e. going to sleep in your makeup.) If you do, I think this may be a product that will aggrevate skin (see a breakout/pimple or two).

Yummy411: MAC's New Mineralized Skinfinishes Images and Swatches

Just more MAC MSF indulgence since I felt these were the gems of the N Collection (I'm MAC Nw35-7 in the face, so I'm sure my hand is a bit darker)




Warmed MSF-great for a nice, natural glow on brown beauties or a great bronzer for lighter chicas. It warms the skin. I'll use this as a bronzer.









Light Flush- this takes you on a makeup fantasy voyage. A great pigmented pink, with orange-descence (pretty gold, glowy orange.) I couldn't capture it's beauty with my cam. MandyPandy gave some insight that on her fair and cool toned skin, this didn't work out for her, but against warmer skintones she feels it's awesome. Apple Diva said it's 'magical'... I agree. I would buy a backup, but I have quite a few MSF's that I'm no where close to finishing.
You know what, just go into the store and let them put it on you. That's the only way you'll see what we mean. Be sure to be in adequate lighting. Go outside in natural light even!

I added Northern Light MSF in there because most who've been following these releases, may be skeptical of Light Flush thinking 'that looks exactly like Northern Light MSF from the Flashtronic collection.' To the naked eye, yes, but swatched... totally different! When I first got NL, I thought, 'a nice pinky highlight' since I don't have many pink blushes. Now, compared to LF, I consider NL a light, subtle, peachy glow. I'm so glad I have both!
