I'm often too pooped after a long day or those occasional party nights to remove makeup from my face. My easier solution is to use a makeup wipe. I haven't been too fond of cleansing towelettes because I'm trying to cut corners and not use water. Even the ones that say you don't need water, I don't buy it. For an even more cost effective solution and something that's already on hand (BabyYum has outgrown diapers, not wipes) I use BabyYum's baby wipes. But does this trick work? What's really the difference between baby wipes and the more expensive makeup wipes?
During my bummed out, lazy days, I've used baby wipes, cleansing cloths, makeup remover, toner, makeup wipes and the list goes on. Here's the skinny (from my experience, of course):
Baby wipes: They lessen my guilt about at least not removing SOME of the makeup. Removes some, not all makeup. Better on the budget, but is better used as a preliminary makeup removal effort before actually doing a skincare routine of washing and moisturizing.
Cleansing cloths (the use without water kind): They aren't quite worth the trouble. May remove more than a baby wipe, but what's really clean without some water?
Makeup remover (on eyes) followed by toner/baby wipe: Again, you are removing some not all makeup. Your skin deserves better! Lessens guilt, but can still lead to bumps and bad skin.
Makeup wipes: These actually have better ingredients in them to remove makeup. They will have more cleaning power than a baby wipe. It's still no substitute for washing.
The real deal: Your face and skin really do need breathers from the makeup and gook that accumulates on your face throughout the day. Whether you use a baby wipe or makeup wipe, it's a preliminary step in your skincare routine. Do your nightly regimen of cleansing with water and facial soap and follow up with moisturizer. (This should be done whether you wear makeup everyday or not.) While this can be time consuming, cut corners by leaving that function a few minutes early or have one less drink. Carry some wipes in the car to multi-task on your way home- remove makeup a few minutes before you hit the garage. Buy time saving solutions. You can buy eye makeup remover to get rid of that waterproof mascara, then use a one step facial cleanser (cleanser and makeup remover in one) like my favorite, Purity Made Simple by Philosophy. At times, I'll dot moisturizer on my face right before bed. Then, as I'm laying down to sleep, I relax by doing basic movements of a facial to moisturize and calm myself. Trust that it doesn't happen every night, but I'm working on it. Besides, the extra minutes it takes to wash my face, I'm also encouraged to brush my teeth before bed. My teeth deserve it too!
If anyone can break it down for you scientifically, Beauty Brains can. Check that out here.
So, what's your night time skincare routine? What products do you love and swear by?
I completely agree! I use baby-babydoll's wipes to get me started because sometimes I can lay it on thick with the liquid liner and shadows and etc...but I always follow through with my regular cleansing routine. A wipe-whether it's a baby wipe or a make-up wipe is not the end all be all for thoroughly cleaning your skin. I am working on making this a habit though...some nights I fall asleep with a full face on! EEEEK!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI live by baby wipes...I use them for my face, to clean up messes, EVERYTHING....I keep them in my car, purse, bedroom...I am seriously in love with Baby wipes.
ReplyDeleteBut I've come to discover that they aren't AS good as make-up wipes. I have to rub extra hard to get Fluidline on my lower lash line off. And because baby wipes are so soft, I end up getting cottony pieces stuff in in eye. Not a good look. So I stick with my MAC wipes and then onto an exfoliant, eye cream and cocoa butter every night. Yaaaay!
I can vouch for this one. They are just great to carry around.
ReplyDeleteI love your post on this today!
ReplyDeleteI personally don't think that wipes should replace washing your face either but it's really great for on the go. I try to keep some baby wipes in my car for if I spill something on myself. Which may be often considering I'm such a clutz ;)
Also, last year when I was training for a marathon, I kept cleansing cloths in my bag for after the runs when I can't wash my icky, sweaty face :)
I've never used cleansing cloths or baby wipes, but thanks for testing them out for us! There are those late nights when I dread washing my face, but I always do it no matter what. My nightly routine is washing my face with simple warm water (face towel) with the occasional exfoliating scrub and then moisturize with Oil of Olay -- I absolutely swear by it!!

I use the baby wipes as a cleansing cloth when I’m doing my St Ives Apricot Scrub. Then I follow it up with St Ives cream cleanser. Next, I use Clearasil acne astringent stuff and then a dab of Cetaphil cream Moisturizer. To me wipes should never be replaced for not washing your face the good old fashion way. I like to use baby wipes because they are soft, cheap and clean.
ReplyDeleteI usually just wash my face with Clean and Clear Foaming Facewash but that's beacuse I try not to wear too much makeup.
ReplyDeleteIf I do have a lot of makeup to remove, good ol' Vaseline works wonders but I do have to rub kinda hard to remove liner from under my eye.
thanks everyone for sharing.. i'm glad we've all found routines that work for us!
ReplyDelete@caramel mimi: st. ives isn't too rough for you? i tried to use that on my face and had to save it for my body and feet! lol... how do you use it so that it isn't so rough? just a dollop? maybe i was using too much?
oh yaya uses it too! wow! let me in on the scoop ladies!
ReplyDeletejust use a dollop...like a small swirl worth and rub it all over and you will be good...

ReplyDeleteYeah, I also just use a dollop of St Ives Apricot Scrub too, but if it gets a lil dry I will put a lil of the St Ives skin cream with it so it won't be so coarse.
