The Makeup Show NYC 2009 : Crown Brushes

Crown Brush was a huge attraction at The Makeup Show NYC 2009.
Better than CandyLand right? Yes, that's James Vincent over there on the left.

Here's what I acquired. (The fastest grip of money I've ever spent!)

(left, MAC # 266; right, Crown Brush C206)
Out of all the brushes that were there, here's what caught my eye- a dupe of my
can't- live- without MAC #266 brush for my eyebrows. Crown Brush Studio Series C206.
There are great angle brushes and ones that perform just as well as the #266, but none have ever come so close as a dupe!
The Crown Brush is longer with a bit of width in the middle. I bought a few just because I was so excited.

Check out Crown Brush for a break down of the assortment of brushes. My faves: The Luna and Badger Brush Series and the Nail Art Brushes!

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Sparrow!

Thank you for letting me be a part of your very special day!

The Makeup Show NYC 2009 Quick Recap

I went. I saw. I conquered... The Makeup Show NYC 2009.

You all know what The Makeup Show NYC 2009 was all about right? You don't? You don't read my blog? Okay, okay, catch up here.

So I had the wonderful opportunity to attend. As a first time attendee, here's what I observed, learned and some of my thoughts in a quick recap (that will be expounded upon in the days to come!):
  • Awesomeness= Michael Devellis and James Vincent
  • First time attending? Don't short yourself going one day; get the total package with 2 days! There's shopping, classes, seminars, meet and greets, photo ops, shopping and more shopping.
  • Prepare with enough space to pack your goodies.
  • Wear comfortable shoes despite the chic world of makeup.
  • Disappointed with MAC Pro's set up
  • Makeup Forever was an experience
  • Sad that Cinema Secrets nor RMCA were a part of the show.
  • Little to no discounts from Graphtobian and Mehron
  • The Makeup Show is an internet celebrity fest
  • Awesome MUA's at the CoverFX and Face Atelier booths!
  • The most flawless foundation was found at the Face Atelier booth!
  • Eat your heart out with Crown Brushes
  • Early bird gets the worm, but the late trollers may get bonus suprises.
  • I want nail brands to be part of the next show!
More to come!

The Pretty Committee April Meet Up

(Stolen pic from Chanel ;) Pictured: Chanel, Shawnta, Erin, Suzie and friend)

The Pretty Committee's April Meet Up went down in Baltimore at the Natural Hair Care Expo. (Thierry Baptiste was there!) I got lost in the commute and didn't make it out. I really wish I was in this picture and got to hang out with the girls! Don't they look gorg?!

My first beanie cap for the locs!

Yeh, so I finally got a beanie cap. Why? I don't want little flying things, air floating things getting caught in my hair without my knowledge. I'm so afraid of that! I often finger comb my locs, but a part of me just isn't sure. I'm also an allergy sufferer and wonder if my hair contributes at all? It doesn't get the same grooming as my relaxed hair did. Besides, I'm such a hat girl. Some days I'd rather wear a hat than to worry about how my hair looks.

Now honestly, I'd rather one of these:

Much cooler for our warmer months ahead. Yes, I will be purchasing from Wet Seal because places like Urban Outfitters has ridiculous prices.

I swear I didn't want to fall into this trend because I've seen enough of it already! Ugh!
But hey, people with locs have been sporting these types of hats longer! =p Loc wearers or even those without locs, have you seen any summer styles that you like or pretty beanie caps that I should know about??

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Happy Mother's Day to all of you out there: moms, single moms, those honoring their mothers, those who have wonderful motherly figures in their lives.  I hope you all enjoy this day!

Best Advice We Got from Mom

Our favorite beauty tips from -- yeah, we said it

Ever since we watched our mothers get ready for a night out (and snagged a bit of lipstick and eye shadow when they weren't looking), they've been sharing beauty tricks. From fighting wrinkles to looking gorgeous with or without makeup, we must admit we've learned a lot (see Mom, we were listening!). And even though "a lady never tells," we couldn't resist sharing our favorite gems of advice.

My Mother's Day Wishlist 2009

What's on my wishlist:

What's on your wishlist? What was a special gift for you this year?

Rimmel Underground Kiss Off! Lip Gloss

"Rimmell Kiss Off! Lip Glosses are smooth and slick- never sticky. Each shimmering shade features a brush applicator for excellent coverage."- Ulta description.

Those claims are very true... and I'm loving these glosses. Fun colors, a good variety and for goodness sakes a brush applicator! (I control the amount I want, not a stopper!)

However, when I use these glosses I get a flash back of a hair brush, cup of water, hair braiding, beads and some foil (before we got hip to putting hair beads on with rubber bands) and my mother saying "Hold your head down!  Turn your head this way!"

Why?

Because Rimmel Kiss Off! Lip Glosses are a dead ringer for the smell of this.........

0_o???
*sigh*
Don't get all bougie on me and act like y'all never used this (my African American sisters, that is).  Oh your mama only bought you the yellow Indian Hemp Hair Food or Pink Moisturizer? Pshh, we had the big hair and bow-rette bin, yes I said bow-rette,  with beads, ties, combs, everything for a family with 3 girls.  We always had a jar of Blue Magic around that would inevitably get a hole in the bottom... that's the excitement of that 'new shatter-proof jar' claim.
I don't know if I can live with Blue Magic lip gloss........

Halle Berry!!! Halle Berry.

Ok, I know I'm sooo late, but there must be others out there like me that whenever a craze hits Youtube (or any media for that matter), I'm actually NOT inclined to run and experience it LOL.

However, while trying to catch up with Facebook, Halle Berry dancing to Hurricane Chris on the Ellen Show faced me again. Hate the song, glad I watched the vid!!

How cute is Halle?! I wonder what lash curlers and mascara Ellen actually uses? Have you smelled the Halle Berry perfume yet? The tester fragrance is never available at the store when I visit =(

The Backup Mascara

Y'all (yes I said y'all. I'm from DC and that's technically the South!) have read my woes of departing with my HG mascara L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black, but then in the same post I had a little poll on my favorite backup mascara of the few options that I had been carrying in my makeup bag.

-L'Oreal Double Extend Tube mascara

-Maybelline Define a Lash

-Maybelline Colossal

-Maybelline XXL (2 step mascara)

Which one made the cut?

.. retract my 'wouldn't buy it again' statement, because I would!

Late Night Snacks While Blogging

What do you reach for?

Here's what you should reach for:
1. Almonds

2. Chopped veggies

3. low fat cheese stick

Want to find out why and some more options? Check out this article for some detail!

*sigh* I find this AFTER reaching for the chocolate chip cookies.

Amina's 90's Girl Group Challenge

What a trip down memory lane! Thanks Amina for hosting the challenge! The nostalgia is sickening, LOL! I love it! There were so many girl groups out at this time, but the groups that I am highlighting are the ones that I identified with the most and more importantly, when I began to notice makeup on artists!

Destiny's Child

Really, I didn't notice Beyonce until people made all the hoopla over her always being the lead singer and in the center of every appearance. I was most interested in Latavia's style. Her curly red hair just blew me away. I wanted hair like that!

SWV
With SWV, it wasn't about the makeup.. the songs were just iconic in the 90's. The hits will always be classic, electrifying the airwaves. I noticed makeup on Coko when she debuted her solo album.. the first time I had ever noticed tinted/bleached brows.. fierce!

702
"No Doubt" and "Where My Girls At" were their most popular records released in the 90's. This particular song was on the Good Burger (Kenan and Kel) soundtrack. Yes, I got the wedge sneakers and 'wide leg' jeans because of them! I wanted to be Irish. Where are they now? I know the lead singer still does back up for major artists...

Since Destiny's Child was one of the few groups that transcended the decade with wonderful success and made me feel like I grew up with them, I did my look based on this picture of them (the original Destiny's Child). I feel this look-smokey/neutral eye with a deep/dark brown lip- was signature of any female artist during the 90's.

I know the picture looks a bit wonky, but it was the best I could do. However, walking around the house with this look, you couldn't tell me that I wasn't ready for my pleather/lingerie, Mama Knowles stage ensemble!

black liner- MAC's Penultimate liner
brown lip- MAC's BBQ lipliner and Mad Cap lipglass
Shout out to Brandy!

Drugstore Paparazzi 5-02-2009: Jane AguaCeuticals Blush Stix, Wet N Wild Speed Gloss

Rite Aid Drugstore usually keeps me up to date on new releases from lines like N.Y.C., Jane, Jesse Girl Cosmetics and more.  It was no surprise when I visited the store and found these two new releases from Jane and Wet N Wild.

Jane. (Be Pure)AguaCeuticals BlushStix and AguaGlow Bronzer.  As you can see it retails for $6.49.  The BlushStixs come in two colors, Peach and Bronze. There are two Bronzers bricked/mosaics.  I didn't check those out too closely, but I did get a BlushStix.  The packaging is made from recycled materials.. how cool?! I like that cosmetic companies are going green!

I love stick blushes, creme blushes and cheeks stains.  Can't wait to give these babies a whirl!

Wet N Wild Speed Gloss collection has quite a variety of colors as you can see.  They retail for about $3.99.  I  picked up two of these babies back in February.  I guess the product is slowly making its way into the store (or should I say getting stocked!?)

I've test driven these for a while now, so I'll have a review up soon!
